Ruth Guechtal

Ruth Guechtal is a composer and performer of avant-garde music and harsh noise whose process involves the invention of novel techniques and instruments in the acoustic and electronic mediums. The purpose of this aesthetic is to challenge the listener’s threshold of tolerance in order to encourage disciplined listening. As a composer, her works are commissioned and performed regularly in both the Edmonton and Toronto areas with artists such as Arraymusic, Stephanie Chua, TorQ Percussion Quartet and the Toy Piano Composers. Ruth’s output is far reaching and diverse with recent works such as a sound installation collaboration named the Hacked Playhouse; an experimental improv performance with Lausanne’s Instrumental Meta Orchestre; Reconstructing through a Sound Gallery, a string quartet the contents of which were transcriptions of construction site recordings; as well as the solo piano work Half-Broken on the Wheel, commissioned by world famous avant-garde pianist Stephanie Chua.

Having completed a Master’s degree in composition at the University of Victoria where she studied with Dr. Dániel Péter Biró and her Bachelor’s degree from Wilfrid Laurier University under Linda Catlin Smith, she currently studies in Edmonton and is now a doctoral candidate completing her thesis at the University of Alberta under the supervision of Dr. Howard Bashaw.
